parent: Why Learn? why study?

This is not a tutorial or an explanation on what Zettelkasten is or why you should do it. Instead, this will be a general note on how your study system should promote continuous learning and enable memory retention.

Let me get this out there It’s difficult to learn. For some people its difficult to start studying, for others its difficult to retain information. Especially in this age of non-stop informational input, actually retaining what you’ve studied is more difficult than it used to be.

Paradoxically, the unending onslaught of information actually crowds your mind to the point where deciphering which information belongs where becomes the challenge.

In a state where information is abundant, curation generates more useful information than collection

This is where a good note taking system can make or break your mind (figuratively). Wether you chose PARA, Zettelkasten, or any other PKM (Personal Knowledge Management) system at the end of the day what you’re trying to do is to fit in a space where you can decode all the information you encountered, in your voice, in your perspective, in a way that you uniquely understand it.

And let me get this out there also PKM’s will slow you down. But that is the point, a 15 second content from tiktok or reels should trigger deep research, contemplation, and understanding. It is how we fight this overwhelming stream of information.

And imagine a world where from enormous amount of information that you glimpse every single day, you gather just 1-5 deep insights and understanding. During the course of a year, how much ‘smarter’ would you become?

This is why I am making this Zettelkasten vault, as well as the digital garden. It’s so I can retain just a glimmer of the knowledge I get bombarded with every day.
